Claims that Singapore have been using illegal paddles to gain an advantage have rocked a sport still trying to recover from the Casino/ Stripper fiasco from late last season.
Recent footage has clearly shown the Singapore team using an older larger paddle design that has not been legal in the professional game since the late 90's. Singapore officials have stated the matter is being investigated via internal channels but Darwin team officials are screaming to have Singapore ejected from the competition altogether.
A press released issue by the NT team said: "There isno excuse for this type of cheating. The odd steroid slipping into your water is one thing but these guys are just blatantly ignoring a set of internationally accepted rules. Everyone knows the bigger paddle gives you more shot selection and gains in speed have been measured at up to 8.6km/h against the newer paddles."
League officials are yet to make any official comment on the matter.
We actually have even, older, larger, clunkier paddles at our disposal and we'll use them at our discretion. You know the sort you'd have used in the early '80s with a piece of string suspended across the kitchen table by two chairs leading to endless fights over whether the ball went under or over the string.
We dispute the bad by-law as an out-date pre-table tennis wars rule that has no applicability in the modern game.
ps: Mrs Morris, are you Brett and whats-his-name's mum? If so I bet they had some punch-ups over the table tennis string.
My brother used to throw the bat at me when he lost. Made a man out of me.
